Mic’s FTDNA Group Projects
FTDNA Group Projects Administered by Mic
Following are the names and classifications of the projects I administer.
First, what is a project and why would I wish to join one?
Group Projects provide communities for people who are interested in pursuing information about a specific topic related to their genealogy.
These Group Projects are run by volunteer administrators*, people like you, who are working on their own genealogy and facilitate their Group Project members’ research using DNA test results. Please note that since projects base research on members’ DNA testing results, to join a project you must test with, manage, or transfer results to FamilyTreeDNA. Other than the price of the test to join the FamilyTreeDNA database, there is no charge to become a member of a Group Project – it’s free!
*These volunteers agree to abide by FamilyTreeDNA’s Group Project Administrator Terms and Policies in addition to the site Terms of Service and Privacy Statement that apply to all customers.
There are about 12,195 projects related to a surname or geographical area of interest.
Here is a link to a search box to see if there is a project to join for your surname or geographical area of interest. If there is not one covering your interest you can request FTDNA set you up one with you as the administrator.
You may join as many projects as you wish. There is no charge or no limit. I suggest joining one, if one is available, on each of your family surnames or geographical areas of interest. You may leave a project anytime you wish, however, once you leave a match you may have hoped for may join and you’ll never know. Members of a project can do some advanced searching in that project that may be closer or more relevant to your quest than if you were not in the project. Also, there are some tools useful to members of a project that are not as easily accessible to those not in a project. And lastly, project administrators are often familiar with the various families in the project and may be helpful to you when you have questions pertinent to your surname or geographical area of interest.
For each Project FTDNA provides a lot of space for the administrator to post information about the Project. Following is a description of the informational pages and the type of information one will discover.
On the About the Project Pages there is information about the Project, the Projects’ Goals, Projects’ News, DNA Results of Project Members, and Statistical information about the Project. It is incumbent on the administrator to use or not use those topics.
Y-DNA Results and Map Overview
For genealogy within the most recent fifteen generations, STR markers help define paternal lineages. Y-DNA STR markers change (mutate) often enough that most men who share the same STR results also share a recent paternal lineage. This page displays Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) STR results for the project. The columns display each project member’s kit number, paternal ancestry information according to project settings, the paternal tree branch (haplogroup), and actual STR marker results. In the haplogroups column, haplogroups in green are confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red are predicted. Above each subgroup, we display the minimum, maximum and mode values for each STR marker in the subgroup. STR marker values that differ from the mode values are color-coded. You can learn more about this page in the FTDNA Help Center.
Group Time Tree
The Group Time Tree shows a genetic family tree of direct paternal lineages on a time scale. It shows how Big Y tested members of Group Projects are related to each other and when their shared ancestors are estimated to have lived.
Select one or more Subgroups to show how those project members are related to each other on their direct paternal lines. Also view where the Group Project’s direct paternal lineages originate based on self-reported information from the members.
Mt-DNA Results Overview and Map Page
The table below shows each project member’s kit number and their tested mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) results. According to the project’s settings, it may also display the earliest known ancestor of each project member. Following scientific standards, FamilyTreeDNA compares all mtDNA results to the RSRS. The earliest known common maternal ancestor to all people alive today as well as several ancient humanoids are the basis for the RSRS. Thus, a comparison to this reference reveals clearly the path between each person and our shared maternal ancestor. In general, those who share the same direct maternal ancestor within the last fifteen generations should have mtDNA results that match exactly.
You may learn more about mtDNA on the Understanding mtDNA Results learning page.
Activity Feed (Social Media) You may share a story, post a picture or ask a question. This feed only goes to viewers who visit the page.
Links– There may be links posted by the administrator for those who visit the site to see.
